Here Comes Heart Month: What Does That Mean for You?

“I like your logo” is something I hear a lot. I appreciate it every time, not because it is part of my branding-although that is nice, too -but because of its backstory.

A great artist and ad man, Roger Simpson, designed it. He was my brother-in-law and I loved and admired him deeply. I’ve written about his powerful passing on these pages before. Roger embodied “Be who you are; Everyone else is taken.” He embraced anyone reaching to be their truest selves. He didn’t like pretense and disliked bullshit. Authenticity, yes; bullshit, no. That’s just who he was.

As his treatment options dwindled, his cheerleading for others expanded. He poured energy into his personal art and creative projects and implored those around him to seize the day. Seize it! Roger unconditionally supported my digging deeply into writing. He badgered me to get my writing business moving and offered to render some logo ideas.

My breath hitched when I saw the lightbulb with its heart element inside; I knew it was the one. It grabbed me right there. Right in the heart.

Now, lucky for me, each time someone says, “I like your logo,” I relive that moment. I feel my brother-friend’s creative energy. I revisit the gratitude I feel over his offering of such a gift…something from his heart to mine.

Friends, in a world that is ‘hard’ wired for data, results, predictability and outcomes, Heartwired writing strives to tap what we sense, feel, and connect with despite that. When we access the heart, we capture wisdom and knowing that can’t be measured. I believe we need heart now more than ever. We need its steady beating rhythm to remind us we are here to seize the day. Seize it! We are here to discover who we truly are. Authentically. No bullshit.
